Southeast Texas gets hit with heavy rain โ sometimes a lot of it, fast. If you've got a slope, a drainage ditch, or a disturbed area on your property, you've probably watched it wash out after a storm. Here's how to actually fix it, not just patch it.
Why Slopes Wash Out
Bare soil on any grade is vulnerable. When rain hits faster than it can absorb into the ground, it runs โ and it takes topsoil with it. Southeast Texas clay soil makes this worse because once it's saturated, additional water has nowhere to go.
The solution isn't just throwing seed at the problem. You need something that holds the soil in place while vegetation establishes. That's where erosion control applications come in.
Erosion Control Options for SETX Slopes
Hydroseeding with Tackifier
Hydroseeding on slopes uses the same slurry mix as a standard lawn application, but with a heavier tackifier load โ a binding agent that helps the mix adhere to the soil surface and resist washout. Once the grass roots establish (typically 4โ6 weeks), they provide long-term slope stability that no surface treatment can match.
Hydromulch
Hydromulch is a thick mulch blanket applied by spray without seed โ it protects bare soil from rain impact and reduces runoff immediately while other measures take hold. Often used in combination with seeding on steeper grades.
Silt Fence
Silt fence is a physical barrier installed around disturbed areas to slow water flow and trap sediment before it migrates off-site. Commonly required on construction sites and works well in combination with seeding during the establishment period.
๐ก The most effective approach for most SETX slopes: hydroseeding with tackifier + silt fence during establishment. The silt fence handles immediate runoff while the grass roots grow in and take over long-term.
What Not to Do
- Don't just hand-seed a slope. Without the tackifier and mulch that hydroseeding provides, the seed will wash away before it germinates.
- Don't wait. Every rain event on bare soil moves more of it. The longer you wait, the deeper the problem gets.
- Don't skip the watering plan. Even erosion-control seeding needs consistent moisture for the first few weeks to establish.
When to Call a Professional
If the slope is actively eroding, steep, or involves a significant amount of disturbed soil, a professional application is the right call. We can assess the grade, recommend the right combination of products, and get it done in one visit.
We serve Orange, Port Arthur, Silsbee, Beaumont, Lumberton, and all of Southeast Texas for erosion control work โ residential and commercial.
