The rarity is the problem
In genuinely cold climates, winterizing an irrigation system is routine. Everyone does it, contractors offer it as a seasonal service, and systems are specified with freezing in mind.
On the Gulf Coast, none of that culture exists, because most winters don't require it. Systems sit through mild winter after mild winter with water in them and nothing happens.
Then a hard freeze arrives. The water in the vulnerable components freezes and expands, and expanding ice inside a rigid brass or plastic body has nowhere to go. Something cracks.
What breaks first
Backflow preventer
The single most common casualty. It sits above ground, it holds standing water, and that water has nowhere to drain. It's also one of the more expensive individual components on the system, which makes it an unwelcome discovery.
Above-ground piping and risers
Any exposed pipe between the ground and a valve or backflow assembly. Same mechanism — trapped water, no drainage, ice expansion.
Valves and manifolds in shallow boxes
Valve boxes sitting near the surface don't get much insulation from the soil. In a sustained freeze they can go too.
Sprinkler heads
Less common but it happens, especially where a head holds water and sits high.
Buried mainline is generally the safest part of the system — soil is a decent insulator and the depth helps.
Protecting a system before a freeze
When a hard freeze is forecast:
- Shut off the water supply to the irrigation system at the isolation valve.
- Drain what you can. Open drain valves if the system has them and relieve pressure.
- Insulate the backflow preventer. Insulation covers exist for exactly this, and wrapping with insulating material and covering works in a pinch. Don't seal it airtight in a way that traps moisture long-term.
- Turn off the controller so the system doesn't try to run a cycle mid-freeze.
- Insulate exposed piping above ground.
None of that is difficult. The hard part is remembering, because it's needed so rarely.
Checking the system in spring
Before assuming everything survived, do a deliberate first run:
- Turn the water on slowly. A fast open sends a pressure surge through a system that may already be compromised.
- Look at the backflow preventer first — cracks, weeping, or spraying.
- Run each zone individually and watch it, rather than running the whole schedule.
- Look for heads that don't rise, zones that won't pressurize, and unusually wet ground.
- Check your water bill against the same period last year. A leak you can't see often shows up there first.
Repair versus replace
A cracked backflow preventer generally gets replaced rather than repaired. Cracked risers and piping are usually straightforward section replacements. Damaged valves are typically component-level fixes.
The thing to avoid is running a compromised system all season. A slow leak on a cracked fitting wastes water on every cycle, inflates your bill quietly for months, and in our clay soil, persistent saturated ground can start undermining nearby hardscape.
