Silt Fence Installation Across Southeast Texas

Perimeter sediment control installed the way it actually has to be installed — trenched, keyed in, and backfilled so runoff can't simply go underneath it.

Silt fence is perimeter sediment control — a filter fabric barrier that slows runoff leaving a disturbed site and drops the sediment out before it reaches a ditch, storm drain, or waterway. It's the most common BMP on any construction site in Texas, and it's also the most commonly installed wrong.

Why most failed silt fence fails

When silt fence blows out, people usually assume the fabric tore or the posts weren't strong enough. That's rarely it. The overwhelming majority of failures happen underneath the fence, not through it.

Silt fence only works if the bottom edge of the fabric is buried in a trench and backfilled, so there's no gap between the fabric and the soil. Water is relentless about finding the path of least resistance — leave even a small gap along the bottom and runoff simply flows under the barrier, taking the sediment with it. The fence stands there looking installed while doing nothing at all.

What proper installation looks like

A trench cut along the fence line, the bottom of the fabric laid into it, backfilled and compacted. Posts driven on the downhill side so the fabric bears against them under load instead of pulling away from them. Fabric on the uphill face. Ends turned upslope so water can't just run around the termination. None of it is complicated — it's just work that gets skipped when someone's in a hurry.

Where it goes

  • Down-gradient perimeter — the side runoff actually leaves from, which is the whole point
  • Around soil stockpiles, which are pure exposed sediment
  • Along ditches and drainage paths that receive site runoff
  • Around inlets where storm drains could take sediment directly into the system
  • Between disturbed ground and adjacent property — the neighbor complaint that becomes a compliance problem

Silt fence is for sheet flow — thin, spread-out runoff across a surface. It is not a check dam and should not be installed across a concentrated channel or an active flow line. Put it across moving water in a ditch and it will fail, because it was never designed to hold that load.

Silt fence is the safety net, not the fix

Worth being straight about: silt fence catches sediment that's already moving. It doesn't stop soil from eroding in the first place. A site relying only on perimeter fence is asking a fabric barrier to hold back an entire slope every time it rains, and eventually it doesn't.

The durable answer is getting cover established on the exposed surface — hydroseed or hydromulch — so the soil stops moving at the source. Compliance context

Sites disturbing one acre or more — or that are part of a larger common plan of development exceeding one acre — generally fall under TCEQ's Construction General Permit, TXR150000. That brings requirements for a SWPPP, a posted site notice, and inspections on a set schedule plus after significant rain events.

Maintenance

Silt fence is not install-and-forget. It fills with sediment, and once it's loaded it stops functioning and starts becoming a liability at inspection. It needs checking after significant rain, sediment removed when it builds up against the fabric, and damaged sections replaced rather than patched around. We handle maintenance through the life of a project, and removal at closeout once permanent cover is established.

Gulf Coast conditions

Rainfall here doesn't arrive gently. Southeast Texas gets intense events that dump inches in hours, and the heavy clay across much of the region has very slow permeability — water doesn't soak in, it runs. That combination puts far more load on perimeter controls than the same installation would see in a drier or sandier region. Fence that was adequate somewhere else is marginal here, which is exactly why keying it in properly matters more than people expect.

Why does silt fence fail so often?

Almost always because the bottom wasn't trenched and buried. Water finds the gap along the base and runs underneath, carrying sediment with it. The fence looks installed and does nothing. Posts and fabric are rarely the problem.

Can silt fence go across a ditch?

No. Silt fence is designed for sheet flow — thin runoff spread across a surface. Concentrated flow in a channel overwhelms it, and it'll fail. Ditches and active flow lines need different treatment.

How often does silt fence need maintenance?

Check it after significant rain and remove sediment as it builds against the fabric. Once loaded it stops working and becomes an inspection problem. Damaged sections get replaced, not worked around.

Do you handle removal at the end of a job?

Yes. Once permanent cover is established and the site is ready for closeout, we remove the fence and clean up the line.

Is silt fence enough on its own?

Rarely. It catches soil that's already moving but doesn't stop erosion at the source. Pairing it with established vegetative cover is what actually holds a site — the fence is the safety net behind that.
